Mule Turnout Winter Blanket

Mule Turnout Winter Blanket

Our mule blankets are cut for a mule’s narrow shoulder and rump (like a donkey’s) but with better with coverage and extra length in the drop to cover a wide rib cage and typically round belly (like a horse's). Adjustable neck with velcro means this blanket can accommodate different body widths AND the velcro creates extra volume at the gusset so that your mule's scapula can move as much as it wants to without restriction. 1680d, recycled rPET shell in a tough ballistic weave for the best durability, waterproof and breathable in a beautiful shade we call Mul(e)berry;  lined with 300gsm fill+fleece for winter warmth and dreamy coziness in both dry bitter cold and the *truly* dreadful wet cold. Tail flap, double belly surcingles, leg straps that don’t drag, super adjustable quick clips at front and terrific reflective black binding for nighttime safety and awesomeness. The same blankets our animals wear at our farm in central NY (think wet cold arriving in November, then bitter dry cold, back to wet cold into March with an extra helping of wind wind wind.)

Not sure which size to order? We can help you figure it out, but start by measuring your muley just lie you’d measure a donkey.

  • How to Measure for a Blanket

The measurement you need to order a blanket is the length of the body along the side. Start by finding the center of the chest where the neck meets the body. Then, using a soft tape measure or some string (baling twine is usually handy), measure along the rib cage to the center of the tail. Hold the string roughly parallel to the ground and measure the widest part of the body. Do this a couple of times, as many mules can be a bit wiggly, and use the number that keeps coming up. This is the length of the body. Now, you can order that size or the closest size up.

  • Will a mule blanket fit my donkey?

It depends on the donkey! Since these mule blankets are cut with a longer hem, they offer  more belly coverage for donkeys who have large bellies and wold find the slimmer donky cut too skimpy. And of course they can be super useful if a jenny is pregnant. On a donkey with an average phusique and a level build, they can work just fine. For donkeys with a pronounced "downhill" build or very narrow build, these mule blankets are likely to have too much fabric and be much too long at the front. Hope that helps!
